Evan Cooper is a fictional character on the TVNZ soap opera Shortland Street. Evan is the only boy of the children and is portrayed by Tyler Read.

However, money from the Hospital credit card that Wendy is looking after gets stolen by one of the Coopers and it is the exact amount for the console. Wendy blames Evan who insists he is innocent. Wendy forces Evan to participate in the car wash with Nicole Miller. Eventually it is revealed that Jasmine stole the money and Evan is proven innocent.
Evan starts to hang round with Phoenix Raynor and starts to bully Ula Levi for revenge for her bullying Jasmine. Ula in turn punches Evan making his nose bleed. Evan continues to bully Ula and laughs at her when she kisses Phoenix and rejects her. Evan is shocked when he hears the rumor that Phoenix is gay and acts uneasy around him. It turns out however that Phoenix is not gay but just does not have romantic feelings towards Ula. Evan decides to attend the semi formal and he, Phoenix and Ula attempt to sneak beer into it. But they get discovered and it is revealed that Evan does not respect his father Murray as he has been absent for a lot of Evans life. Evan then steals vodka from Murray's work the next day and gets drunk in a park. He comes across Ula and throws her bag into a tree. When he retrieves it, he falls, injuring his spine. He faces potential life in a wheelchair but it turns out not to be that serious.
In December, Evan is shown to be looking forward to the family camping trip but when Murray reveals they can not afford it, Evan elbows Wendy and escapes. Murray later confronts him but Evan runs away from home and starts sleeping in an abandoned apartment building. He is shown one week later, still living there and he has taken up smoking and drinking. When he hears Callum McKay enter the building, he tries to hurriedly escape, but accidentally drops his cigarette on some alcohol causing a fire ball. Evan is knocked backwards, falling down a series of steps. He is shown knocked out as the fire spreads throughout the building, not only putting his life in danger, but that of Callum, Rachel and Chris'.
In 2011, Murray rescues Evan and Evan is put into a coma in hospital. Maxwell reveals there is a chance of brain damage however it comes out clear. Evan gets charged with arson and though Wendy believes he did not do it, Murray refuses to believe his son is innocent. After pressure from his father, Evan pleads guilty to a crime he did not commit. He eventually is sentenced to community service.
In March 2011 : Before the meeting, tension remains between Murray Cooper and Evan. At the meeting, Murray admits he pressured Evan into pleading guilty. But this isn't good enough for Rachel. Evan speaks up in defence of his Dad, insisting his lies cost him his father's trust. Murray and Wendy are moved, and Rachel McKenna and the Youth Justice Co-ordinator are impressed by Evan's maturity. Evan is sentenced to 100 hours of community service at the hospital, gardening. Evan tries to cheer up a withdrawn Ula, until Jasmine's jealous teasing about Holden sees his good work undone.Telling Jasmine off, Evan reveals that Ula never had sex with Holden.
On the 20th June episode, it is hinted that Evan may have a crush on Ula, after he had refused to invite both she and Phoenix over to his house because it was messy and plus Ula needed some help with her science homework which involved lemons. He tells Phoenix this though Phoenix starts to suspect that there maybe more to the reason why Evan does not want Ula around his home. Phoenix passes this information onto Jonothan, Rachel's brother, who believes that Evan may like Ula. To Evan's surprise both Phoenix and Ula arrive at his home but again he is embarrassed because his mother, Wendy is around. Later on Phoenix leaves leaving Ula alone with Evan to complete her science homework. They work together and to their satisfaction, it is a success. They both realise that it was good hanging around each other despite his family being around. Bella is also teaching him how to drive for his restricted license.

Murray agrees to trial them both and Ula and Evan compete against each other. Evan outdoes Ula and Ula uses her feminine wiles to even the score, leaving Evan furious.Competing for the cafeteria job, Evan gets his revenge on Ula by sabotaging the coffee she makes for Chris. Ula tries to get her own back but Evan turns it around on her - only to be caught out by Murray and sent packing. Evan is frustrated he's blown his chance, but Murray offers a compromise - he'll pay Evan to clear out the garage for the inorganic collection. Evan and Phoenix get to work, and Evan realises some of Murray's junk might be worth money. He makes a call to a scrap yard, and confirms they're sitting on a hundred dollars worth of scrap metal. However, Phoenix admits he's put the scrap metal out on the street. They hurry outside to see if it's still there, and Evan is horrified to realise the scrap metal has been taken - along with Murray's precious motorbike.
